[pct-l] Interesting: emergency stations above Palm Springs

I've been following this for several months. These are on a "trail" that the rangers don't talk about as they would prefer it to go unnoticed. It has 8000 feet of gain in 11 miles. Unfortunately the internet has made it easy to find out about and many go thinking it's a walk in the park, or their egos tell them they *they* are better than everyone else and don't need to be prepared. Some try this route, a desert route at the beginning, in summer with just a small water bottle.

I and many others fear these boxes will be depleted by those who don't really need them. I hope I'm wrong and they are used only by those in true danger.

The Riverside Volunteer Search & Rescue group must be getting tired of searching
every year in the rugged mountains through which the PCT passes. They've
installed
two emergency stations for lost hikers with solar powered beacons to light the
locations after dark.

Four deaths noted in this article. Same area PCT hiker John Donovan died in
2005.

The S&R people actually do a lot of work in that area. They have a website.
