[pct-l] It's wet out there

Good morning to all prospective PCT hikers,

Eric’s post should provide good motivation to the 2011+ PCT thru-hike
aspirants. While occasionally beautiful hiking weather in the Pacific NW
can extend well into October – don’t bet on it. This last week is a good
illustration: There has been significant rain – and some snow -- from N.
Oregon to the border. While rain isn’t exactly fun, it’s mostly an
aggravation which a prepared hiker can abide. Early-season snow, however,
can be a show-stopper. The tendency is for hikers to assume that since they
managed to successfully negotiate 5’-10’ of showpack in the Sierras, a foot
or so in the N. Cascades should be a piece of cake. Right?

Unfortunately, that’s not the case:

Enjoy your planning for ’11, but don’t forget that your snow problems aren’t
necessarily over when you cross I-80. Keep up a steady pace and avoid the
trail-town vortexes.
