Another way that some folks have made a career of backpacking is to become a travel writer...check out Chris Townsend and his website. He has hiked and written about his adventures for decades. Others have done so as well but his name comes to mind. Just don't give up your dream...you can find a way to make it work for yourself, though you probably won't get rich in the process.
