The above news item demonstrates that rattlesnake bite fatalities are rare but
real in the USA.
This event occurred in East San Diego County. Not sure how close/far it was from
the
PCT Kickoff area.
Anti-venom shots by medical emergency rooms neutralize the risk of fatality in
the vast number of
occasions, but the damage inflicted by the venom is not neutralized and victims
sometimes
must endure amputation of the bite area (finger, hand, toes, foot).
When stepping over logs or rocks, look first at the ground on the opposite side.
