I think it can be a little difficult to 'time' this sort of thing. The
mosquitos are the worst in Central California but that doesn't means you
won't have (flying) bugs bothering you before and after.

I carried a head net and tent for the entire trip.  On a few buggy nights,
I tried sleeping without the tent and just the head net but I found it
uncomfortable and maddening. Just because the bugs can't get to your skin
doesn't mean they can't annoy the hell out of you buzzing and whining just
an inch away. Much more comfortable to just set up the tent and
get a good night's sleep.
