I've done probably hundreds of days of trailwork on the PCT and other trails, and I don't recall a bad interaction with a hiker, ever. Or I must have buried the evidence!
>From a gift standpoint, I agree with most everyone, a gift of a person's moment of time from their hike to thank us for the work is priceless.
One other thought: I've often met people on the trail, meaning to look them up on trail journals later, only to have forgotten their names. A small slip of paper with a trail name, URL, or some such, would be great. nothing as elaborate as a business card. I remember 10-some years ago running into Tahoma and Gazelle on July 4th at Red's Meadow on a Very heavy snow year, they were the first that year of ten people who finished, and I really enjoyed following their journal.
