Everyone probably already knows this but it's good to mention it anyway:
pepper spray is not a bear (and other animal) REPELLENT.  It only deters
critters if they get a face-full of it in their eyes and airway.  Don't ever
use it like you'd use mosquito repellent; if you spray it around your
campsite it will likely attract curiosity from the very things you're trying
to avoid.  There have been instances of misguided people in Alaska who
applied pepper spray around their campsites only to have grizzlies show up
and roll around in the stuff.
