I started out with a Eureka Timberline. Yikes! Then a Eureka Hike 'n' Bike, two person, 5 pounds. Remember that huge storm that blew through the Sierra in August of 1988 (or so)? The one that wiped out the aqueduct and buried 395 in mud? We rode that out at Virginia Lake above Tully Hole in the Hike 'n' Bike.
We had a Mountain Hardware something or other at Sam Mack Meadow one June night a few years back. It was hard to sleep with the tent flapping so violently, but the frame didn't budge.
Then a Mountain Hardware Skyledge 2, a little over four pounds, that wasn't tested severely but seemed sturdy and held up in a couple of Sierra squalls.
Now we use a Big Agnes Seedhouse 2. About 3.5 pounds? It was tested last year during a very windy night off Sunrise Highway, where it held up very well. And again last July at the base of Mt. Lyell, where it stood up to winds strong enough to bend one of the poles.
Yes, I know, those tents are way too heavy, and I'll never get my base weight down to 8 pounds using that gear. Shucks.
Gary
