I don't like fleece because it takes up a lot of room in my pack and
air blows right through it. It also gets static cling more easily
than other things and since I have long hair, I get a lot of hair
stuck in it.
I prefer a thin, down jacket. I have the Patagonia down sweater but
there are other brands. They are actually made not to be warm jackets
but to be wind breakers. The theory is that the wind will be slowed
by the first layer of nylon, brought to a near stop by the small
amount of down and then completely stopped by the inner layer of
nylon. But I have found mine to be very warm as well. And since it's
not a huge puffy down thing it doesn't take up a lot of room in my
pack. It also washes in the washing machine very easily, air drying
quickly.
With another light windbreaker over it as an added layer, I've been
very warm down to the kinds of lows you'll see on the JMT. It's also
the system I use to ride my Vespa around town in the winter. (I live
in So Cal.)
