[pct-l] Help needed to stock 3rd Gate Cache

Good morning, Elevator,

I also would prefer to have the caches a bit off-trail and out of sight, but
there can be a significant land use conflict. The PCT has easement
rights-of-way across certain landholdings which are relatively narrow. To
put a water cache/camping area further away would require the PCTA to
renegotiate an easement; prevail upon the landholder’s good will by somehow
seeking permission to allow further “unofficial” encroachment; or – much
less desirable – to just do so by trespass unknowing to the landholder.

Some of the caches are at, or very near to, road crossings. Good examples
are the caches at Scissors Crossing and Bird Spring Pass. It’s unlikely the
angels who stock those -- and other – caches want to haul all that water an
extra quarter-mile, possibly uphill. They usually put them just far enough
away from the road to be out of sight of road traffic.

I’ve been fortunate in several crossings of the San Felipe Hills. It’s been
cool, and I had carried a sufficient load of water out of Scissors Crossing.
The only water I've taken out of the Third Gate Cache was less than a liter
to have a good swig and top up my canteen. In ’07 I also took a chunk of
lead out of the donation box for hikers. The sign on the box said, “Help
yourself”, and I really wanted to carry all of it, but I decided to leave
all but one piece for the herd behind me. What a sacrifice.
