When the manufacturer states that the "axe" look-alike is not certified as an ice axe, to take the forces required of it for technical use, including self-arrest on crust or ice, it has to make you pause and ask yourself whether it is really what you're looking for.

If you're going to waste the money and weight on an axe:

- do you know when to use it,

- do you have the foresight and experience to spot the situations where you're going to have to stop yourself and take it off your pack in time to have it in hand when you might need it to save your life should you fall,

- and do you know, because of training, how to reflexively react, depending on how you fall and the position you end up in, to use the thing in a safe way to stop your slide?

If you don't, why did you but it and are about to carry it for miles and miles?

Was it because "everyone told me to?"
