Good morning, Gideon,
If you start mid-May and are willing to join the other hikers in-progress
you should have sufficient time to finish at Manning Park within
approximately four months. It your trip takes longer than four months –
meaning a projected completion date past mid-September – the chance of
completing the trip becomes less certain. On the north end, mid-September
is a bit of a tipping-point. Seasons vary, but the probability of
encountering troubling snow accumulation after mid-September becomes greater
by the day. The trail in October could be fantastic; but more likely it
will be dreadful, or worse, nearly impassible.
By mid-May the thru-hikers will probably be spread out somewhere north and
south of Big Bear. That means you could probably travel to Los Angeles and
find local/regional transportation to some point in that general area.
