[pct-l] Unfit father of a hiker baby

David & Rachel,
Ignore the MORONS or Trolls...whatever the case may be.
If you've been on this list for any length of time or done ANY research on
long distance hiking, U already know that ANY long distance hike is
"dangerous". One of the best things about hiking the southern part of the
PCT, is that there's a road or town or store or SOMETHING within 20 or 30
miles almost regardless of where you are. If you have good maps and many
possible Bail-points for the "What If" scenario considering UR bringing a
toddler, I'm sure U'll be fine and have a great time!

In reply to "not knowing how tought the PCT is.": I give up. You're right.
I know nothing. Thru-hike the Pacific Northwest Trail, and please, please,
please tell me how tough a trail is. There's a reason less than 30 people
hike it every year. My wife and I did last summer. Good lord, people. We
will be doing this trip, and for all those going out in 2011, it'll be great
to see you there. Please have Child Protection Services waiting for me at
every highway crossing. \
Cheers,
David and Rachel Liechty

In 2006 the only water I did not treat at Kennedy Meadows was from the
ampground--- Within 3 days I was so sick, I had to drop down to Lone Pine to
eek medical attention.
Watch out!

In 2006 I treated every drop of water I drank at Kennedy Meadows, and
hile I didn't get giardia, I did have intestinal issues. In 2009 I drank
he hose water without treating it, and had no issues at all. Obviously
very persons system reacts differently to these things.

nbelievable. I shouldn't be trusted with a child, because I want to take a
hild backpacking? I am not a cliff jumper. I am not a skydiver. I am not
a
ock climber. I do not drive motorcycles. I don't skateboard. I don't even
go
ce skating. I am not a stunt man or a monumental risk taker. It baffles
the
ind how people insinuate that you are putting your child at risk by going
into
he backcountry. I'm sure I don't need to pull the stats for you on per
capita
utomobile accidents on the myriad roads in this country. My wife and I will
ot put our child in danger. You are infinitely more at risk putting your
child
n a car seat in a vehicle on a freeway than you are fording a river.
Believe
e, if a river's too deep to ford, we won't do it. Bottom line. I love how
eople think that we would do this without the utmost preparation. Trust me,
here will not be a creek or river that we will not anticipate on this entire
rip. No stone will be left unturned. Wil
l there be obstacles and surprises. Definitely. Am I going to rapell down
the
ide of a mountain with my child cinched up with some bungee cord and a
arrabiner? No. We are not "playing." We are living. And we are making a
hoice that our child can live right along with us. I am a teacher, a coach
and
PCA, and I have never endangered any of the children entrusted to my care
in
he ten plus years I have been an educator. I would also like to say that
eople in our community and the outdoor community have largely been extremely
nthusiastic about our attempt. I don't know if you've read the book "Zero
ays," by Barbara Egbert, but she and her husband thru-hiked the PCT when
their
aughter was 10. Yes, she was more self-sufficient, but I would be much more
fraid of fording a river with a short ten year old, than with a 16 month old
trapped securely to my back in a sturdy, well made backpack. If the
challenge
f completing the PCT in 2011 were to present a serious
risk, we won't take it. But we are preparing right now to ensure that we
will
e as ready as possible. I encourage all feedback, but will not be bullied
into
elieving that I need to be reported to Child Protection Services because I
want
o share the wilderness with my child. By the way, in days of yore (i.e.
before
ars, roads, etc.), people actually walked with their children. There are in
act people who still do.

When I do a day hike on the PCT, I don't consider myself a "PCT hiker".

ast year I met the "People of the Goat". They were hiking with their 10
month
ld baby. Lady Goat Person carried the infant while the 19 goats carried all
heir gear. They only covered about 6 miles a day but they were the happiest
ittle family I ever met on a trail.
ady Goat Person made a special shirt that held her baby letting her walk
hands
ree. The baby had lots of protective clothing as the goats allowed them to
arry any and all needs.
don't know much about hiking with children but I know they did so
succesfully
f not very far each day.
must add that while Mother and baby were very healthy looking, Mr Goat
Person
as quite thin and pale. I learned first hand that Women react quite
differently
o the stresses of hiking... IE they don't get all skinny and scraggly like
us
uys. Female bodies go into some sort of "survival" mode while we become
starved
ittle shrunken men.
am getting a little off topic.. Sorry.
erhaps a backup plan would be a good idea. A good friend or family member
could
se a car to provide support along the tougher sections of trail in case the
ittle one needs a break.
hen again our ancestors travelled great distances with children.. Might be
an
pic Adventure!
est of Luck!

Ignore the troll. Opinions are like anal sphincters; everybody has one. View
hem with an eye towards something you might have overlooked, but in the
final
nalysis, the only opinions that matter are yours and your wife's. It's your
hild. your responsibility, and your decision.
Having safely raised two outdoor-oriented kids to adulthood, I can say with
some
evel of confidence that parenting is a long, hard, often rocky, and
generally
ewarding road. You are, in my opinion, starting out well, and your child
will
ne day thank you for it.

We had a gal and her hubby come thru here SOBO a few years back. They had
een thru hiking in the North Cascades and after the hubby crossed a swift
unning river she began to cross. She lost her footing and was swept away
nd out of his reach. The only thing that saved her life was her pack
etting caught on a low branch. The high swift water had her pinned and tore
er pants off. This story came directly from them.
I've listened to hikers for 7 years and how many dangerous spots they have
ome through. The winters are brutal up here. Most of the Fall it is pouring
ain everyday. Hikers are miserable when they arrive. They are soaked to the
one and very cold.
As to Scrambler coming through here when she was 10 years old. She also was
ery tired and wet and cold. She's a tough cookie and has been hiking local
ince she was tiny. The PCT was not her first hike. She carried her own
ear, food and other needs. She walked the whole trail. She was experienced
efore she did the PCT. Her mind, feet and body were ready. She was taught
xtremely well by a set of parents who had years of difficult hiking under
heir belts.
Unless you have hiked the whole PCT you don't know how rough and dangerous
t is.
