Usually they are... it depends on what it is.  But I also have to point out that although we do this, we don't do it as much as some people would have you think.  It's actually rather rare the majority of the time, because hikers tend to repackage their food.  Non-food items are typically not repackaged, so those we tend to put on the shelves with no indication of where they came from.
