Ø I agree. Of the Hwy. 395 towns, I think it's the best. Bishop has a
lot of options but is, especially in the north end, a bit strip mally. And
Independence has fewer options. Lone Pine is a nice balance between the two
with a killer view looking up at Whitney to boot.

A group of us had a five star meal at Seasons on the main drag. The Dow
Villa really is a great place to crash. There’s some great saloons down the
road. On a side road there was a little video store filled with a huge
collection of autographed photos & the owner was like the comic book guy
from the Simpsons, but he had some great stories. I enjoyed the place
enough that I’m compelled to make it our resupply point through the Sierras
just to get in another visit.

Incidentally, the hike from Whitney Portal up the east face of Mt Whitney is
really quite amazing. Big climb, but if you had the energy for it, it’s
really beautiful, and the Whitney Portal puts out a fantastic breakfast.
