[pct-l] Iodine as water treatment?

While I don't disregard what UR Dr told U, I would question her complete
understanding of the issue as well as the amount of Iodine ingested
(speaking on her comment about "even a few days")...Do your own research and
you'll find that the Japanese Diet includes much higher Iodine than the Avg
American consumes due to their intake of seaweed. I seriously doubt the few
mg of iodine consumed over a few days would be damaging to your body, but I
suppose it's a possibility.
What I do know is that I use it...and have never had any issues...I don't
mind the taste (I like seaweed too though). :D

I actually discussed this with my doctor today as I was hoping to use Iodine
as an emergency treatment if my filter fails.
It's not reccomended over the course of a hike as long as the Pacific Crest
Trail. She suggested I shouldn't even use it for any more than a few days in
an emergency. Apparently the risks associated with using it over such a
period outweigh the benefits particularly with the Thyroid as mentioned
previously. Even with the smallest amount in a large amount of water she was
worried about the harm it would cause.
I'm allergic to chlorine so I'd asked in the hopes it would give me a second
option. Apparently not.
So I don't know if that helps any :/

>From what I've previously read/heard, there are still unanswered questions
about the long term effects that a high level of iodine intake (treating all
of your water with it over a 4-6 month period, for example) can have on the
body, particularly the thyroid. I did two Outward Bound courses in high
school and although all of the participants were given iodine to treat their
water, most of the guides seemed to use filters - the reason being short
term vs. long term exposure to excess iodine intake.
Of course, these 'unanswered questions' probably means there's a doctor out
there somewhere who would love a guinea pig for his study. Need funds?
