[pct-l] snow? where do i go?

Ok, so I was all set to hike from Ashland south starting July 1st for the
months of July and August. I am gathering that I'm gonna run into snow. I am
not equipped for that. I'm thinking that I should walk south to north.  I
can start as far south as I need to in order to avoid snow. Any suggestions
for a good place to start? Do I need to call ranger stations at Kennedy
Meadows or Tuolomne Meadows or farther south and ask? Is that how it's done?
