The 5 gallon lid does keep mice out. The 5 gal pail worls so well that VVR requires the use of the 5 gallon plastic pails if you are mailing a resupply to them to hold for you.

in there because once in, they can't get out! They work their way in

I believe a 5 gallon bucket with the usual really-hard-to-remove lid
would keep a mouse out as long as the lid is on tight.
