Even though 12 and 13-year old boys have lots of energy and tend to love risk, given the amount of snow in the Sierras this year, any hikes in the high Sierras in June are likely to involve some dangerous stream crossings and abundant snow. Unless they are seasoned veterans, I'd be inclined to choose a lower hike in June.
Although not in the areas that you are focused on, the Echo Lake to Donner Summit is a view-filled, stretch of the PCT that includes the Desolation Wilderness, Dicks Pass, and some wonderful ridge walking above Lake Tahoe. It is not nearly as high, still pretty dramatic, and would be nice in early August.
