[pct-l] Upcoming Tahoe hike

Neil, ditto on parking/starting in Tahoe City. You'll have a beer and
burger to look forward to at the Bridge Tender when you get back. The
Brockway trailhead is just a turnout on the highway. I think parking
in Tahoe City would be better. I plan to use the bus and leave my car
at home. I'm doing the loop starting in August, and I'm taking bus up
from Reno to there, and head counter clockwise. That said, you can
take the Amtrak train (really a bus) from Sacramento to Truckee, and
the TART bus or the Tahoe Trolley to many access points around the lake.
Echo Lake lodge was ok. They stocked the usual notions of 'camping
food,' and not much else, at stiff prices, so, not a good resupply
point, but the highway is busy and there shouldn't be a problem
hitching down to the big Raleys at the Y in South Lake Tahoe. But I
had a blueberry shake at the lodge that was pretty tasty after twenty
five miles. There were half a dozen PCT thru-hikers munching junk and
going through their bounce boxes received at the lodge.
Don has a good suggestion RE the GPS waypoints. You might find some
north slopes and shady spots still covered with snow pillows, although
it's been warm and snow is melting fast. Two weeks ago I lost the
trail under snow on the north side of the rim trail out of Tahoe
Meadows for Brockway. I haven't been over the new section, so I wasn't
sure where it was headed, and by the network of tracks I wasn't the
only lost soul. Five years ago I lost the trail on the east side in a
place or two in July, another heavy winter.
Just checked the Tahoe Rim Trail website: www.tahoerimtrail.org>using
the trail>trail conditions: July 13 The west side from Tahoe City all
the way to Big Meadow and beyond to Monument Pass is either under
snow; mostly snow; or open, but with extended patches of snow. In
addition, deep snow on Relay Peak between Tahoe Meadows and Brockway.
It's a late melt this year. We had spring two weeks ago on Tuesday.

I thru-hiked the TRT as part of its official opening in 2001. The TRT
is a perfect 165 mile loop. You don't need a shuttle. Park at any of
the trailheads and hike in the desired direction. You'll end up back
at your car.

Tahoe City, the lowest point on hte TRT, is where I'd start if I did
it again. Echo Lake is not a hiker-friendly place.

  Subject: [pct-l] Upcoming Tahoe hike

Hey, so to get ready for my next years PCT thru hike I am attempting
a thru
hike of the Tahoe Rim Trail starting this weekend. I will be leaving
from
Santa Cruz after work on friday around 6pm and drive to my parents in
Sacramento. The next day I am hoping to drive to North Lake Tahoe
and park
my car at the Brockway Summit/Hwy 267 then via some mode of
vehicular travel
get to Echo Lake/Hwy 50 PCT trailhead and begin hiking North around
the
  lake.

So I am offering a rideshare from Santa Cruz to Sacramento and then
from
  Sacramento to North Lake Tahoe.
Also I am looking to see if anybody would be willing to drive me from
Brockway to Echo Lake/Hwy50 for some cash as the services I have
contacted
are asking $75 and the busses seem like it might take me all day.
But I am
also open to taking the bus to south lake and then getting a ride
possibly
getting a ride to the trail. Open to suggestions as well. Thanks so
much

  -Neil
