I just read the whole article. I turned 12 that year so I wasn't even old
enough to go. And there wasn't a local scout group where I lived in Iowa.
Just poking around, it seems there are a lot of issues of Boys' Life online
-- apparently part of Google's online book project. Probably a lot more too.
