I agree Steve. I believe in redundancy of safety systems and keeping an eye on maps.
But there are times when Half Mile's way points would take you / keep you closer to the trail whereas a compass is most effective as the 'way the crow flies.'

GPS or not? Either way refer to your compass and topo maps regularly.
Don't even think about relying on a GPS as your only guide.
