Be careful about the passport book and the passport card. The card is authorized for crossings by land or sea only among the US, Canada, and Mexico (at least). It is NOT sufficient for border crossings by air. I was denied permission to board a NWA flight from Minneapolis to Vancouver this summer because I only had my PC, not the passport book. If you think you might fly home to the US from Vancouver, make sure you have the book.

Canadian officials have access to US criminal record databases. This is similar to how a police officer can lookup information about you during a traffic stop. As for the passport chip:
