I used a ziplock bag for my paper maps along the the whole trail in 2008.
Never had one problem.  Ever.  Not in a rainstorm, not when I dropped it in
a puddle, not in the snow.... never had a problem.

I used the kind with the little square zipper on it.  That way I knew it was
actually shut all the way.
