I customized one of those air filter masks that fits over your nose
and mouth.  I removed the stiff plastic layers and trimmed down the
remaining soft material to the minimum required to just cover the
front of my (rather large) nose and mouth.  No more bug eating!  You
can just let it hang around your neck when it's not necessary.
Doesn't weigh much.

Downside was that it was usually hot when I was wearing it, and the
covering held in the breath heat.  I had to leave it off periodically
to intake some cooler air.  Someone more clever than I could probably
whip up something similar out of bug mesh.
