I recently joined a few hiking/backpacking groups through meetup.com... a couple groups based in the bay area and one called the sacrameto backpackers meetup. I found the trips to be filled with a great group of folks in all age ranges (our last trip had ages 14-62). Your Mom may want to look into this website to find some groups to join and people to get some practice hikes and backpack trips in her area. Maybe I'll get to meet her on one of our meet ups.

Hello everyone!
I am writting on behalf of my mom who is 60, and is interested in doing some hiking on the trail, eventually leading to doing a thruhike. She is in the Bay area/ Sacramento/ Plumas forest area, and looking for other hikers in the area she can go out on some trails with.
