I don't know if I would call my self an old fool, but I do like to reminisce.

 

In 1980, when I hiked the PCT (omigosh: 30-year reunion time) there were pay phones, not cell phones. Cameras used film ("What's that?" ask the newbies) and Digital (with a capital D) was a company that was at the forefront of computer technology. (The personal computer had yet to be invented.) Large portions of the Pacific Coast Trail were unfinished and walking along stretches of highway ("Look out for the logger trucks.") was part of the plan. Tents were in vogue, not tarps. And if you had less than 40 pounds in your backpack, that qualified for traveling light.

 

Oh, and Mt. St. Helen's still had its top.

 

But one thing hasn't changed: the hikers, and the lure that drives people to attempt to walk from Mexico to Canada.
