[pct-l] SoCal in winter

Jona,

Snow will be a serious issue, especially once you get to Baden Powell, about 33 miles from your start. Of more concern will be the Station Fire closure (44 miles from your start) that will prevent you from getting too far on that hike regardless of the snow conditions.

Subject: [pct-l] SoCal in winter

I'd like to do a week-long section hike near LA at the end of
January/beginning of February. I was thinking of starting at Cajon
Pass and heading west over the San Gabriels. Having never hiked in
SoCal (I'm from the northeast) I'm wondering if any could advise me on
what conditions to expect. Do any parts of this section of the PCT
reach elevations where snow will be a problem? Will snowshoes and full
crampons be required? What night-time temperatures should I expect?

I'm not looking for a winter alpine excursion, so are the San Gabriels
doable or should I just hike somewhere else?

Many thanks,
Jona
