Esbit is an excellent stove if used correctly. When I hear folks say Esbit
stoves don't work, it just means they did it incorrectly, that's all, no
biggie.
Esbit stoves/fuel are the lighter than any canister or alcohol stove set up.
You can mail fuel for your entire hike (via ground) in your drift box and
never worry about about having fuel. Entire threads on this list have been
devoted to 'where to find fuel along the trail' for alcohol and canisters.
It's kinda crazy.
You NEED a wind screen. A store bought wind screen is not 'better'. You
don't need an elaborate wind screen. 2 or 3 folds of aluminum foil works
perfect. The wind screen should extend from just below the lip of your pot
to the ground. You should have a gap less than a 1/2 inch all the around the
pot. Use a lid on your pot!
