> A few years ago a friend of mine was sleeping with his food (using his
pack
as a pillow) at Little Jimmy Spring north of Los Angeles when a bear grabbed
the bag out from under him and took off. It's not just the Sierra that has
bear problems, although that's the worst area.
That's a good example of a spot with high bear encounter probability though.
Lots of weekend campers from the city. Every time I've been through there's
been bear tracks or stories of other hikers encountering a bear there, or
garbage strewn about from a recent raid on the dumpster. In 07 there were
about 100 boy scouts there - they had their bags hung from trees, about four
feet off the ground. ;-)
Of course, if you arrive there for the first time and there's nobody around,
no fresh garbage, etc you'd have no way to know it's a fairly high traffic
spot, which translates into higher chance of a garbage & camp-food addicted
bear. In general, camp spots like that are the most common places for an
encounter, in my limited experience.
