Hi Kathryn,

 

I have used a poncho/tarp with a bivy in the past.  This system worked well for me but it might not be the right choice for others.  I recommend testing out any shelter system you use prior to a thru-hike to work out any problems.  With practice you can get really fast setting up and taking down your tarp/poncho which will minimize your exposure to weather.
