Diane - What you describe is already a reality. They're called booties and
you'll find them where they sell bicycle gear. I have two pairs of
Sidetrack neoprene booties that fasten at the back with velcro. The bootie
goes over your show and has a wide piece of elastic under the arch. The
down side is that your feet sweat, so when you take them off, your socks
are wet. Here's a link
http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/SH400D01-Sidetrak+Ignite+Bootie.aspx?sc=FRGL.
You could probably cut the neoprene down to just fit to the top of your
show.

I'm afraid that unless it stops raining, the only time you'll get to
take a break to air out your feet is when you sleep at night. So keep
a spare pair of socks that you never wear on the trail or sleep
barefoot (actually, barefoot feels great.)

This goes for whether there's trees or not.

I have been thinking about making some kind of rain gaiter that
covers the whole top of my shoes from like the ankle down but chances
are my feet would just get hot and sweaty. I still want to try it
someday. Affix them with Velcro like Dirty Girl gaiters.
