There actually are Real Snipes at Little Crater Lake in Oregon. Here is the truth:
About 3 miles or so north of Timothy Lake there is a crystal clear ice cold (34'F) artesian pool nestled in a beautiful
meadow about on quarter mile to the side of the PCT. Take a few minutes to see this jewel. The water is crystal clear and you can see to the bottom at 120 ft deep. When you are there walk around to the north of the pool and within about 100 feet you will find a carved wooden bench placed there by friends of someone named "Silly Sally". There is a plaque nearby describing the wonder of listening to the Snipe wooing a mate and claiming a nesting site with its who-who-who-who-who-who- sound created by the wings flapping past specially curved whistle shaped tail-feathers. It is a haunting three dimensional sound that floats and swoops across the meadow at dusk. This very real phenomenon is mesmerizing in its soft beauty. There are nice campsites about 100 yds east of Little Crater Lake.

For those too jaded to fall for such a story just skip this delight.
For those who take time to experience this wonder just enjoy.
