An alternative to goose down is kitten feathers. The best is the fine
soft fur behind the ears. I recommend wearing gloves when you pluck
them, kitties don't always like this and their claws are sharp.
Harvesting kitten feathers from mountain lion cubs is not recommended.

But fresh feathers do have some advantages. If you hike with chickens
on a leash, you can gather feathers as you hike and add them to your
sleeping bag. This way as you head north into higher altitudes and
cooler temperatures, your sleeping bag will get progressively warmer.
