[pct-l] routes, Yosemite Hike in Late July

I have hiked the loop with my family--in at Yosemite Creek over 10 Lakes-
East to Tuolumne Meadows/Glen Aulin then down the Grand Canyon of the
Tuolumne to Pate Valley and up to Lukens Lake (4,000 foot climb about!) and
back to Yosemite Creek. A truly fabulous hike!

Mosquitoes are prolific depending on when you go --if they are in full swing
you will find them at 3,000 feet or 12,000 feet --it won't make any
difference! It starts to get better after mid July but we have been hounded
by them in August--depends on the year and snowmelt. If you really don't
won't mosquitoes, I'd go after the middle of August. :-)

I know nothing about Ten Lakes Pass. From what I have heard, PCT thru-

hikers experience insane mosquitoes in Section I (Tuolumne Meadows to

Sonora Pass) when they come through. They usually come through in

early to mid-July, if I'm not mistaken. So if your plan is to stay at

higher elevation to avoid mosquitoes, it may not be effective.

I took the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne instead of the official PCT

trail and I did it in mid-June. It was stunning. Probably the

prettiest place I've ever been in Yosemite. The river was huge and

thundering. The falls were spectacular. Some of the creek crossings

were a bit scary and part of the trail was flown over by the Tuolumne

River. No mosquitoes for me then. I saw a bear! It was amazing.
