Michael,
It is possible but not advisable due to a whole myriad of issues, and this is from a guy who has to hike with a service dog. You will probably do yourself and your dog a huge favor if you find a place for your dog to stay while you are on trail.
If you decide you really want to pursue long distance dog hiking, I will be happy to pass on my experience off list. Feel free to contact me through direct email.
