I'm not sure what you are recommending here instead of 'reply' but it is important to use the 'reply' function (or reply all) to keep threads 'connected'.

Use 'reply' if you want to respond just to the author.
Use 'reply all' if you want your response sent to the entire list.
Use 'new' if you want to start a new topic.

Don't use 'reply' or 'reply-all' if you are starting a new topic as this is called 'thread hijacking' and messes up the presentation of threads in many mail readers.

In all cases, edit ruthlessly to strip out extraneous text.  You should do this whether you are a top-poster or not.
