I agree that if he had a SPOT or similar device, he wouldn't have died and there would be no movie nor book.

But a map & compass I'm not sure about. The reason he couldn't hike out was due to the flooding, ice cold river. Unless there was
another way around that obstacle, a map/compass wouldn't have helped him escape. But he should have had them just the same AND
known how to use them. A 16 year old youth recently risked his life by sailing around the world without knowing how to navigate and
by using only gps.


By the way, I watched a really good documentary on Chris. They determined that his weight loss was nearly from the time he hiked out 
there. Between weight loss and the injury he referred to, he may not have been able to hike out even if a map had shown a safe route.
The documentary that I just watched showed the producer attempting to cross the river at nearly the same time and location where Chris
was ... and he was immediately swept off his feet and had to hang onto an overhanging branch to avoid being swept downstream.
