Okay, this is total speculation... but I think if he had brought a SPOT...
he would have been rescued... then calmed down for a while... then outgrew
the whole "young traveling hobo kid" phase (like most of us... I mean,
them... do).  Then, after establishing his own identity outside the iron
fist of his parents, he would have settled down, got married, and relaxed
into a career... only to reminisce about the the exciting adventures of his
past every time he saw a young traveler panhandling on the street corner.

Who knows... he might have even gone on to thru-hike the Pacific Crest
Trail.

But Alas, the SPOT had not yet been invented.
