MREs are heavy, bulky and somewhat expensive. 

Most hikers are not blessed with the logistic train
of the US military as well. 

When the military has to have people hump their food
over long distances, they use what is essentially the equivalent
of backpacking meals:

The US military does not have their soldiers carry MREs...why
should we? :)
