Hygiene Reinhold writes: Yes Diana, The evidence of your flat rock and stick excavations is evident all along the trail....''APP'' sticking out of a 2'' hole or dug up by the critters trashing up the trail because Diana is to lazy to carry a potty trowel and bury her waste properly.  I can always tell that Diana was here.  My cut down and reshaped plastic potty trowel weighs 1/2 oz. and will dig a 6'' hole in no time flat and leave no evidence that JMT Reinhold was here.  I can just see you running around, on a cold rainy night, desperately looking for a flat rock or stick.  What if you can't find a flat rock or stick in time?....Dhuuu...  You really ought to practice ''leave no trace'' hiking.   Say, while back somebody on the list was advocating leaving the ''APP'' behind and using flat rocks to wipe......was that you?

Switchback replies: First, there is always evidence that Reinhold was here.  The smoking campsites along the trail and gnashing of teeth are evidence of his passing.  Sacking and the auction of captives leave clear proof of his destructiveness in hikerdom.  Wait a minute, that is me.  Disregard.

Actually, JMT Unsupported Reinhold is on to something here.  Burying your waste is very important unless you are on the Mt. Whitney Trail, then you have to carry it out.  To take it further, what a lot of hikers do not realize on the trail, it is not just the visual aspects of disposal.  It is the sanitation aspects too.  There are three hidden killers of a hike; DEHYDRATION, NUTRITION, and SANITATION.  These can take you down out there and you never know it.  You say to yourself, "This hike sucks and I want it to end.  I don't feel well."  If you are well hydrated, fed, and healthy, I just do not know how the trail can defeat you.  You are easily in the Rhythm of the Trail.  You are having a blast and say, "Please Lord do not let this end.  Everyday is a new adventure in your Mother Nature."

For example, carry hand sanitizer or keep your hands very clean.  My restroom mess kit includes; super small bottle of hand sanitizer, HandiWipes (extra protection against the infamous Crusty Butt), and toilet paper.  You can carry the Wipes and toilet paper out very easily or burn them at the next legal fire campsite.  No problem.  This is so simple.  You should think of not only keeping clean on the trail, but germ free too --- as much as possible.  You will feel better and be refreshed and have a more successful hike.
