Cost is highly variable per individual - also depends on what you would consider
to be included in your "total" cost (ongoing monthly bills, mortgage/rent, etc.)...
For on-trail costs, it can be done 'on the cheap' - but there will be times you'll 
want to (or have to) spend more than a bare-bones budget...
I think the majority seem to spend $2500 to $5000 while on-trail...
I'm planning on a low budget hike - $3500 maximum, but will have more than that
available, if needed!!

Question I have to ask:  "...do the trail Jan next year."  Do you really intend 
to start in January?  If so, you might want to rethink that!  ;-)
