[pct-l] Cost of Food

Good morning, Dan,

A hiker can theoretically get by on-the-cheap by eating lots of oatmeal,
etc. but few people can and/or will do so. In ’06 I did a fairly detailed
cost analysis of the more common menus that I use when I take along a stove
and cook one or two meals per day. Some of the results appear at
http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=166392

Today, that $0.25 per ounce may be closer to $0.30 per ounce for 200-250
lbs. of trail food, excluding the cost of shipment. I assumed that trail
food purchased in towns would cost about the same: More expensive, but
without the shipping. Any meals consumed in trail towns would be extra.

As it turned out, I didn’t cook in ’07, ’08, or ’09 which probably increased
the cost somewhat because I had more prepared foods and fewer commodity
items.
