[pct-l] Deodorant?

Deodorant? Unless you've got an interview on the trail, I'd just leave it at home. Definitely qualifies as an uber-scented item that will also attract animals. You're going to get sweaty. Deodorant isn't going to do a thing about your stank encrusted shorts/shirts/socks. There is a fabric made by Milliken fabrics called Visa Endurance. Mountain Hardwear put it out; it's an anti-microbial shirt that's anti-odor, extremely quick wicking and has flat seams. That was the only shirt I brought on a 1000 mile hike last year, and I'm still using it. My wife also stayed married to me without deodorant, so I'll continue to refrain from its usage.

pinion that it really won't make a difference, and I'm starting to worry he

I plan to look at the report the day before I start out, take the most recent
nformation and mark up my maps, atlas, whatever with a blue magic marker to
ndicate the water sources that are still good. I might just do the ones for the
irst section of the hike until I get to another town where I can get the latest
nformation for the next section. I will also put the list in my smart phone as
URL and as a document. Over kill but no added weight for both and I can access
he document when I might not be able to reach the URL.

itch the deodorant. Unless you intend to deodorize your whole body, the
ccumulated stank will overpower your powder fresh pits by day 3.

It *does* make a difference.
Especially if you're trapped in a vehicle with a fellow hiker who thinks it doesn't make a difference and for the sake of the kind soul who gave you a ride in the first place.

Good morning, Alexandra,
n a long trail, items such as deodorant, cologne, highly-scented soaps,
tc, become scarce or even non-existent – by choice. The story about stinky
hru-hikers is a common chuckle-point, but however true it may be, it just
sn’t noticeable among other thru-hikers. In fact the hikers – myself
ncluded – find the overpowering sickening-sweet odor of day-hikers and
eek-enders to be very objectionable. If that seems strange it’s similar to
hat we Americans find in most places overseas; at first we may do some
ose-wrinkling, but soon it becomes almost totally unnoticeable. By
omparison, when some of those foreign nationals visit the over-washed US,
e notice their aroma constantly because of the contrast.
his reminds me of a comment made by an accomplished long-distance hiker – I
an’t remember her trail name – about her more conventional little
ister: When
sis asked about trail life the hiker just couldn’t find a way to explain
hat she had hiked the entire length of Oregon without once having taken a
hower. That’s maybe not so unusual: There are lakes and creeks in which
o bathe. It’s not necessary – or possible -- to step into a shower every
ay.
or the ladies, leg and ‘pit hair fall into a similar category. Pretty
uickly it just isn’t noticed.

ostholer,
So, you used deodorant daily on your thru-hike?
I'm not saying that it's not necessary to do what you can to stay clean. I'm
aying that it's a waste of time preventing your pits from stinking when your
air, groin, ass and feet reek.

I'm probably one of the rare ones that does use it on the trail but mainly because it helps to prevent chaffing.

I ditched the deoderant about a week into the trail...for one ur not taking a
hower from 4-5 days a week and putting that stuff on everyday is just gonna
uild up a thick nastiness under ur arms after that longs, not to mention clog
p the pours and cause ingrown hairs which can also become infected with all
hat dirt and deoderant building up in there with the sweat..uh yeh I'm sure u
et the pic!
lso carrying the weight of deoderant is like carrying the weight of maybe half
snickers...personally I prefer the snickers:~
s for the smell...well no one else will be wearing it so ur technically gonna
e stanky to all the other hikers cuz they won''t be used to the smell of clean
nymore and u'll be smelling clean and well again I'm sure u get the pic!
used wipes under my arms before I went to bed at night and then if i needed to
itch I would wipe again just before so I wasn't stinky to whoever picked us
p...french baths are more gross than no bath...just sayin...
