Cache 22, just above Road 22 is stocked year round, tho it drops to anywhere
from 15 to maybe 15 gallons after Halloween to 5 or so by Memorial Day
weekend. Cache 44, between whats left of the trailhead at the top of Hwy
44, pretty much the southern end of the Hat Ck. Rim, and the blacktopped
parking lot of the upper Hat Creek Valley overlook. Ours is a top-off cache
only please, Subway Cave or Cave Campground (follow the blacktopped road
from Sub Cave to the Hwy {89} cross it and look for the nearest water faucet
in the campground) have water to really restock for the next 4 mile walk to
the far end of Old Station, the O.S. P.O. and FireFly/FireWalker's place.
We keep a very small amount of water at Cache 44, especially now that it
sticks out like a sore thumb amongst the ashes and charred tree trunks. We
pull these bottles out before it freezes hard and replace them about
Memorial Day weekend when we get some section hikers trying to get the Rim
done during mild weather. Cell phones work well about anywhere on the
Rim...there's a repeater up there.
