I saw 22 black bears along the PCT this year. Gave me some very exciting times. I don't think they are too dangerous provided people store food properly. Also the practice of cooking away from the camp helps I think. Wild camping probably helps too where permitted.
Incidentally I met a ranger in the North Cascades that said soon it will be possible to carry firearms into National Parks? Something about a law change I think.
