Hannah,
    1. DON'T tell Mom you'll have to hitchhike several times to hike any
long trail.
    2. Do tell Mom that driving down any road, especially over 30 mph, is
more dangerous by a factor of 10 or more I'd guess. Even flying, the safest
form of travel otherwise, is more dangerous.
    3. Start when you want, but hitch back to ADZ if you do. Consider
starting with the pack from ADZ, when there will be plenty of people on the
trail to ease your mother's false worries; I'd guess the chances of actually
finding a partner at ADZ are slim due to no means of communicating your
needs, other than trying to meet all 600 people there. [ADZ SUGGESTION: a hiking
partner board, in addition to the ride boards]
    4. Tell Mom that the bad guys and girls (the kind of girls Reinhold &
Switchback like to meet) simply won't do the work to get on a trail and
course trouble (which is why the 2 not-so-gentlemen above are always
frustrated)..
    5. Email me off list for an old, old document, which perhaps I should
cut & paste to pct-l once a year), named Bob's Ten Rules for Hitchhiking. I
wrote it back in my AT section hike days, and pasted it to the at-l a few
times.
    6. Also DON'T tell Mom that your own stupidity or careless is far more
likely to hurt you.
    7. If you're over 18, and not dependent on Mom,  & Dad, just go hike;
there'll be many things in life they'll worry about, or not want you to do.
I'm not saying that going against their wishes, or defying them, is easy.
    8. Lastly, your gut will keep you wary of Dirty Old Men, like
Switchback, Reinhold, & me? Just look for any gray hair.

I need a hiking buddy. I'm wanting to thru hike the trail, starting in
early April. I've heard some discussion about a "trail kickoff" where
you can meet up with others, but was kinda wanting to have something
quasi-established beforehand as my mother is on the verge of cardiac
arrest as it is. So yeah... somebody hike with me! Thanks!
Axe murderers need not respond (says mom).
