Robert nailed it.

To many, usually those who love the forests and the "inner-sanctum" sense of

covering they bring to our lives, being above timberline IS other-worldly, 
like being on the moon. There are many places along the Crest that seem that

way. Sonora Pass, Desolation Wilderness, as well as Upper Evolution Valley.

However, after a snowfall or while the snowpack still lingers in the Spring,

these high and mighty cathedrals are clothed in robes of shimmering white, 
clean and crisp, almost as if they were new again. There are no easy words 
to use to describe just how incredibly beautiful, soft, and quiet the high 
country can be under snow.

Don't get me wrong, either. High rock, decomposed granite trails, some mud 
or dust and tundra-like grasses are beautiful, too. But if I were to choose 
which I prefer, it would be the mountains with a covering of snow. The 
bonuses are there are no mosquitoes, bears, mice, mud, dust or dirt, or 
masses of people. The people you meet have "earned their turns" (on skis) to

get there and are in as equal a wonder at the beauty as you are.

My message to aspiring PCT thru hikers,

you're about to see one of the most incredibly beautiful mountain ranges of 
the world and the highest and most magnificent parts of it may be under snow

when you pass through. Take lots of pictures!

Yeah, I always imagined Evolution basin being a wonderful place of beauty.

The first time I saw it I realized what a hellish, desolate and remote place

it is.

In 2007 I finally got a taste when I got caught in a early winter storm. 
Hurricane
force winds, freezing temperatures and constant avalanches with no where to
hide.

Don't get me wrong, it is beautiful in it's own way. Kind of like being on 
the moon.
I think they named it Evolution because it is what it looked like before 
there was
any life on Earth, even plants.

Being there in the dead of winter would be... worse.
