The Sierras was the only place I saw anyone in a hammock.

The forest isn't as dense out here as it is in the East. Maybe that  
is why most people do not use hammocks. But if you are willing to use  
it as a ground sheet in case there's no suitable spot to set it up, I  
suppose it could work.
