Dave--

I didn't know that Cartridge Pass was part of the old JMT. I went over it
many, many years ago early in the season. One of my most cherished Sierra
photos is looking down from the pass into the basin, 60% covered in snow. I
saw no one back there, and in fact, may have been the first one over the
pass that year.

Are there other JMT re-routes like Cartridge? It might make an interesting
variation to follow or cross-country the old route.

Ah Jeff, well then maybe you have hiked one of the more spectacular
portions of the original JMT that was rerouted in the 30's over Mather
Pass. The old JMT over Cartridge Pass and down into the beautiful Lake
Basin is not to be missed. The reroute has allowed the intrepid hikers the
rewards of having one of the great peak bagging and dotted lake basins to
themselves. I guess in retrospect the reroute over the dusty barren Mather
Pass was a wise idea. It preserved yet another one of the more spectacular
areas along the JMT, because as I've experienced it: the best of the JMT is
the stuff off of the JMT. The JMT is just a means to get there.

I've hike the JMT, or parts of it, off and on since the late 1960s.
